Course Description

The Washington Executive Seminar (WES)! is a two week or 10-day competency-based leadership seminar for high-potential executives at the GS 13-15 levels or equivalent. Developing the understanding and skills needed to navigate the political climate is essential for leaders, hence the theme, “Leadership in a Political World.” The objective of WES is to equip leaders with the information, tools, and experience they need to lead their organization and work within the constructs of the political environment.

The WES curriculum is focused on the Office of Personnel and Management’s Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) framework with an emphasis on Building Coalitions and Leading Change. Training is conducted at the Graduate School USA campus in downtown, Washington DC. Program components include individual development, experiential learning, and assessment. Attendees also complete a team project in which they will present in a simulated “hearing” at the end of the session. Team activities may require collaborative work outside of the classroom.

Learning Outcomes:

Learn key aspects of congressional operations and related oversight and effective strategies for working with Congress.
Receive practical training on how to work with media and present on camera.
Work on a team to review a case study and deliver congressional testimony.
Review and refresh personal and professional leadership goals and practical information about the Senior Executive Service (SES) and writing ECQs.
Learn about political challenges faced by leaders in the past and how they overcame them.
Develop a network of peers to rely on for support.
Retain, support and grow talent.
Gain insight into what leaders need to know about the political dimension of leadership.
Have access to training with proven success for 30 years.

Long-Term Leadership Development

The Center offers four popular long-term training programs tailored to the needs of government employees from the GS 4 to GS 15 levels or equivalent. The programs continue to address the needs of organizations and their employees to stay relevant, adapt to change, and be equipped with the necessary skills to lead and be led.

These programs require an application be submitted to Graduate School USA. Some agencies have internal procedures that require you submit your application to them to conduct their own vetting process. In other cases, an individual can apply directly as long as they are authorized by their agency and meet the qualifications. Further detail about each program is included below. Senior Leadership Seminar

Managers or leaders at the GS 13-15 level have the option of attending one or more of the following courses included in our Senior Leadership Seminars (SLS). If you attend all courses in the seminar series, you receive a SLS Certificate. These courses do not require an application and can be attended over a number of years.

Enhanced Leadership Courses

The Center for Leadership and Management uses a variety of assessments in their courses. These assessments are also available to organizations on a contract basis as well as anyone on an individual basis. For more information contact us at clm@graduateschool.edu.

Assessments

The Center offers a number of courses that expand on our longer term programs, are tailored to senior leaders, or both. Some of these courses are contract only. If interested, we can bring the course to your organization or host it for a group for your agency here at the Graduate School. There is no application required for enrollment.
